Deal Lake, and what happens when it overtops
Deal Lake started life as an Atlantic estuary and was reshaped from 1890 onward — the ocean inlet was closed off and the water split into several lakes and ponds. Today almost the entire shoreline is developed, with many houses sitting inside the 100-year flood plain. Across the township, flooding follows either several inches of rain in a short window or several days of steady rain.
