When Deal Lake cannot drain fast enough
Deal Lake is the defining flood source in Interlaken. During severe storms water drains into the lake from several upstream municipalities, but outfall constraints prevent it from reaching the ocean before the banks overtop and flood back into surrounding blocks. Sediment and debris in the lake and its tributaries further restrict flow — the borough has identified two repetitive-loss properties along the lake.

Small lots on a former estate
Interlaken was incorporated in 1922 from portions of Ocean Township and Asbury Park, carved out of the Woolley estate as a residential borough. The housing is almost entirely single-family on small lots by shore standards, much of it interwar and post-war, with mechanical systems often tucked into tight basements and crawlspaces.

Borough hall on Grassmere Avenue
Construction and zoning permits for Interlaken go through the borough construction office. Work that adds, moves or substantially alters plumbing, electrical or structural elements generally needs a permit before it starts; like-for-like repairs to existing fixtures usually do not. The borough participates in the county-wide hazard mitigation plan updated through 2026.
